Wisdom Tooth Extraction
Glendale Wisdom Teeth Removal from North Canyon Dentistry
Typically emerging around when patients reach their late teens to mid-twenties, the third molars, also known as wisdom teeth, are often considered as one more factor to reaching an adult smile.
While every person will develop wisdom teeth, few are able to accommodate the third molars without issue.
For these individuals, North Canyon Dentistry offers wisdom teeth extractions for patients in Sun City, Glendale, AZ, and Peoria, AZ.
Impacted Wisdom Teeth
While some patients are able to accommodate extra molars, many are not. In some instances where the jaw is too small to fit additional teeth, the third molars can become impacted or stuck in either the bone tissue or soft tissue. Known as bony and soft impactions, respectively, these conditions can have serious implications for the overall health and function of the smile, as teeth can begin developing incorrectly. As a result, neighboring teeth are pushed out of position, leading to overcrowding and bite misalignment. For patients who have already had orthodontic care, wisdom teeth impaction can undo prior treatment, ultimately requiring patients undergo braces again.
Wisdom teeth can also become partially impacted, a process in which the molars only partially emerge. This also leaves the smile vulnerable to a number of dental issues, including gum disease, cavities, abscess, and pericoronitis, an infection near the tooth that can compromise dental function and health. With these consequences in mind, extraction is often necessary.
Symptoms of Impacted Wisdom Teeth
Proactive wisdom teeth extraction is a key factor in keeping your smile as healthy as possible. While some patients may not notice their molars are coming in, patients experiencing impaction are often able to tell that their smile is changing. Some of the more common symptoms of impactions include:
- Red, swollen, and bleeding gums
- Jaw pain, particularly near the impaction point
- Swelling around the jaw
- Discomfort chewing
